Pocket is gone: where researchers save articles now

Mozilla closed Pocket on 8 July 2025 and Omnivore closed in November 2024. What the read-it-later apps still offer, and what a research workspace does differently.

What closed

Pocket, the read-it-later app Mozilla bought in 2017, shut down on 8 July 2025; exports were possible until 8 October 2025. Omnivore, the open-source alternative, closed its hosted service on 15 November 2024 after its team joined ElevenLabs.

Read-it-later apps that remain

Instapaper: free, with Premium at $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year for full-text search, unlimited notes and text-to-speech (prices from its site, September 2026).
Raindrop.io: unlimited bookmarks, collections and highlights on the free plan; Pro adds full-text search, permanent copies and reminders.
Readwise Reader: part of Readwise Full at $9.99 a month billed annually or $12.99 monthly, with a 30-day trial; RSS, highlights and sync to Notion and Obsidian.

What a research workspace adds

Saving an article is the easy part. Researchers also need the passage they cared about, the reason they saved it, and a citation later. In Vite Research the extension highlights the passage on the live page with a comment and tags; Save page to Library keeps a snapshot of the page with a hash, so the source can be verified and cited (APA, MLA, Chicago, BibTeX) even after the page changes; feeds bring new articles into the same place. Highlights, feeds and 100 sources are free; the Pro plan is $8.99 a month.

Moving your Pocket export

Pocket exports were CSV files. The Library imports CSV, BibTeX, RIS, CSL-JSON and browser bookmark files, so a Pocket or Omnivore export can be loaded as sources; the pages are fetched again and snapshotted on import.
