JournalTOCs is gone: where to find journal tables of contents now

The free directory of 25,000 journal feeds no longer resolves, Zetoc retired in 2022 and the Researcher app has closed. What to use instead, and how library guides can update their links.

What happened

JournalTOCs, run at Heriot-Watt University, listed the tables of contents of more than 25,000 journals and let anyone follow them. On 6 September 2026 its domain, journaltocs.ac.uk, no longer resolved from two different networks. Zetoc, the British Library's alerting service, was retired on 1 August 2022. The Researcher app, which followed journals in a social-style feed, has also closed. Many university "keeping current" guides still link all three.

What still works

The publishers' own feeds. Every large publisher still publishes one feed per journal. This directory fetched and validated 1,259 of them on 6 September 2026 and re-tests them monthly; the A to Z and field pages list them with the address ready to copy.
OPML per field. Each field page offers one file with every validated feed of the field, which any reader imports in one step.
BrowZine and LibKey (Third Iron) if your library licenses them: a journal browsing app tied to your subscriptions.
Feedly and Inoreader as readers; both accept the OPML files from this site.

For library guides

If your guide links JournalTOCs or Zetoc, the field pages here are a maintained replacement: they show when each feed was last checked, they are free, and they carry no login. Link the field page for your discipline or the directory home. Corrections and missing journals: [email protected].
