How to highlight and annotate web pages in Chrome and Firefox

Install the Vite Research extension, select text on any page, add a comment and tags, and find every highlight again in the web app. What it does, the shortcuts, and what it does not do.

Install

Get the extension from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons (version 2.0.2). Create a free account at app.viteresearch.com/signup, or sign in. If you are already signed in to the web app, the extension picks up your session with one click.

Highlight

Select any text on a web page. The Create Highlight dialog opens.
Write a comment (required), add tags, pick a colour and choose who can see it: only you, public, or a space you belong to.
Press Ctrl+Shift+L to open or close the sidebar, which lists the highlights on the current page, all your highlights, and those shared in your spaces.

Do more from a highlight

From a highlight card you can copy a link to it, copy a citation, save it into a project note, share it to a space, or delete it. Ctrl+Shift+S opens Quick Capture: a note with tags and attachments that lands in your Thoughts workspace. Save page to Library keeps a snapshot of the page with its metadata and, if you choose, monitors it for changes.

Find it again

In the web app, Highlights lists every highlight with filters for the current page, public, private and space; search is by tag. Saved sources are searchable in full text in the Library.

What it does not do

It highlights HTML pages only. PDFs, images and documents are not supported.
It runs in Chrome and Firefox. There is no Safari, Edge or mobile version.
Reopening a page re-anchors highlights by their position in the page; if a site rebuilds its page, a highlight can lose its anchor. The Library snapshot keeps the text either way.
