From highlight to citation: a preserved-source workflow

How a web page becomes a source you can cite months later even if it changes: save, snapshot, verify, quote, cite, export.

Why web sources need more than a bookmark

A bookmark is a link, and links rot: pages move, get rewritten or vanish. A citation to a page that no longer says what you quoted is a problem for a thesis, an article or a piece of reporting. The fix is to keep a copy of the page as you saw it, with a way to prove it has not been altered.

The workflow in Vite Research

Save the page. In the extension sidebar click Save page to Library; in the web app paste the URL; or import a BibTeX, RIS, CSV or bookmarks file. The page is fetched, its metadata (title, authors, publisher, date, DOI where declared) extracted, and a snapshot stored with a SHA-256 hash.
Highlight what you will use. Highlights on the page keep the passage, your comment and tags; quotes attach to the source card.
Verify when it matters. The card's Verify integrity recomputes the hash of the stored text and reports whether it matches.
Monitor if the page can change. Choose manual or monthly checks on the free plan, weekly, daily or six-hourly on Pro; changes land in the Changes inbox with a diff and a change ratio.
Cite. The Cite button formats APA 7, MLA 9 or Chicago, as text, BibTeX, CSL-JSON or a Markdown footnote, with a warning when author, date, publisher or URL is missing and when the source changed since the citation was created. The citation can carry an "Archived at Vite Research" note with the snapshot date.
Export. Bibliography (.bib), cards (CSV, JSON) or, on Pro, an evidence pack: a zip with a manifest of per-file hashes, a printable report, the bibliography, the cards, the quotes and the change history.

Share a preserved source

A source card can be shared as a public permalink that shows the metadata, an APA citation and, if you choose, the quotes and change history, never the snapshot text. Revoke it any time by making the card private again.
